Using DPMM for optimization, digitalization, and automation projects for quality control

Vetter Quality Control case study BioPhorum’s Digital Plant Maturity Model (DPMM) guides companies to understandthe systems and processes that are needed to reach certain levels of digital maturity. It describes five levels of maturity, ranging from manual paper-based through to the fully automated ‘adaptive’ plant of the future. Level five is a future concept consistent with Industry 4.0, representing aspirational solutions not readily
achievable with current technology.

We spoke to Katrin Butscher, Process Manager in Quality Control at Vetter, about how she used the DPMM in her work on optimization, digitalization, and automation projects for Quality Control (QC).

How did you use the DPMM?

At the end of 2021, before we knew about the DPMM, we started developing our own Quality Control (QC) maturity model which has many parallels to the DPMM. Our model is designed to evaluate the data quality of already existing QC processes, projects in QC and new project ideas. This allows us to drive project success and include recommendations for supplementary action.

We use the DPMM as an additional tool, after we have finished developing our QC maturity model, to confirm the vision and goals we set for our approach. We carried out benchmarking exercises to make sure our terminology and thinking are on point, and as a result, we were able to check the alignment with industry goals.

Before developing our QC maturity model, we didn’t evaluate data in the same way, but knew we had a business need. In looking for a model to communicate our vision of data quality in QC and to make sure that current and future QC projects could be heading in the same direction, the QC maturity model was developed.

What were the results?

We’ve always discussed doing maturity evaluation across our different QC departments. Now that the assessment is complete, the results show we are now more aligned within QC. Sometimes, the evaluation leads to scope changes but gives more input to our work on data quality. The model gives us more insight and informs project leaders about data quality, what they have to look at within a project, and how to digitalize it. This brings us one step closer to achieving our vision.

Furthermore, as QC business process owner, we added value to the whole digitalization process at Vetter by being additionally coordinated and harmonized in understanding with other departments focussing on digital transformation.

How does DPMM help the long-term vision for your labs?

The DPMM’s maturity levels contribute to defining our strategic goals and long-term, 5+-year vision for QC. It has assisted us in getting to where we are today by ensuring we are aligned with industry goals and that our QC maturity model is set up correctly.

What value do you get from BioPhorum workstreams?

I am part of the QC Lab of the Future Workstream and the sub team working on the Electronic Certificate of Analysis. I like the cross functional discussions between the different experts and biopharma suppliers in these teams. They’re very valuable and everyone shares experiences allowing new lessons learned across the board. These BioPhorum teams support our mindset to understand industry issues and show us that we are often facing many of the same challenges. My collaboration with BioPhorum expands my network and gives our company access to
presentations on new solutions, which improves my personal understanding of new technologies that are available.
