The key goal of the biopharma industry is to speed up the development of innovative medicines and ensure their availability to a greater number of people. The longevity of the industry relies on sustainable practices. Driving environmental sustainability is therefore a priority.
The BioPhorum Environmental Sustainability Roadmap outlines the BioPhorum Sustainability vision of improving patient health by providing biopharmaceuticals while respecting the planet and responsibly using its resources.
To help deliver this vision, license holders, contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs), and key suppliers have committed to defining a common industry approach for calculating and exchanging environmental impact data, through the development of a product carbon footprint (PCF) framework for the biopharma industry.
The framework intends to create a harmonized industry approach to calculating supplier PCFs that aligns with and complements existing standards and methodologies, providing additional guidance specific to the biopharma industry where gaps are identified. T[LP5] he drivers for the framework are to allow future-proofing to respond to forthcoming regulations and encourage eco-design through the supply chain.
To maintain momentum and gain industry support, BioPhorum has developed a position statement called Developing a harmonized approach to product carbon footprint data for the biopharma industry.
“What a major milestone!” said Matteo Alaria, Head of Sustainability BPS at Sartorius. “A clear and aligned commitment to develop a framework on Product Carbon Footprint was needed in our industry. This will reduce complexity, simplifying progress towards our decarbonization goals.”
The position statement outlines the context for the use of PCF data for assessing environmental impact and use cases for PCFs. The emphasis on transparency enables a deeper understanding of greenhouse gas emission hotspots in the supply chain. Armed with this knowledge, license holders, CDMOs, and suppliers can take a collaborative approach to identifying opportunities for emissions reductions.
Through the development of this framework for self-declaration on product sustainability performance for the biopharma industry, the group aims to deliver:
- A harmonized industry approach to calculating PCFs of supplies into the drug manufacturing process that aligns with and complements existing standards and methodologies
- Additional guidance specific to the biopharma industry where this is required
- A framework that ensures biopharma is well-positioned and equipped to meet upcoming industry and regulatory requirements and aligns to future industry guidance, where applicable
- A clear industry commitment to tackling environmental impact in a holistic way.
