How do you use OTIF and OTTP metrics?

‘On-time in-full’ (OTIF) and ‘on-time to-promise’ (OTTP) are indicators of supply chain health and provide data to problem-solve and improve performance. They form the basis for useful key performance indicators that establish a common understanding and expectations, and can improve the relationship between biomanufacturers and suppliers.

Unfortunately, there is no standard definition for these metrics – this lack of clarity inhibits effective communication between suppliers and biomanufacturers.

This is why we have published our OTIF and OTTP Guide, which provides an introduction and a high-level overview of OTIF and OTTP performance.

The guide starts the journey toward a collective understanding of process and performance, and begins to standardize how we work. Improving your OTIF and OTTP performance is important to maintain ongoing and effective collaboration between suppliers and customers so that both have the necessary tools to act if or when required.

The guide provides detailed definitions and explanations on:

  • OTIF – guidance for ‘actual orders delivered’ and ‘expected orders to be delivered’
  • OTTP – guidance for ‘actual orders delivered’ and ‘expected orders to be delivered’
  • Using OTTP and OTIF together to align expectations.

Using both OTIF and OTTP metrics should create an opportunity for better alignment between customers and suppliers on lead-time expectations. The goal is not simply a specific number but to ensure the customer gets what they need when they need it, while allowing sufficient time for the supplier to meet the demand.

Correct use of OTIF and OTTP can also help improve forecasting. Decreases in these metrics can be directly correlated to fluctuations in demand vs. forecast, or miscommunications on promised delivery timings (or unachievable requested delivery dates).

Used together, OTIF and OTTP are clear and quantitatively measurable key supply chain performance metrics that can positively impact profitability and help businesses meet or exceed end-user expectations.
