Supporting members to improve patient health and transition to a low carbon, circular future. Environmental sustainability improvements will provide value across the industry, and we are drawing from our network of experts to deliver these important changes.
BioPhorum Sustainability supports organizations to identify where and how they can make changes. We connect sustainability leaders across drug development, manufacture, delivery, distribution, and the supply chain. Members of BioPhorum Sustainability have access to license holders, contract manufacturers and suppliers to help develop their internal strategy. BioPhorum members are at the forefront of cradle-to-grave sustainable change – at an organization and an industry level.
The carbon footprint of the global biopharmaceutical industry is nearly equal to half the UK’s annual emissions. While many organizations have science-based targets to reduce their environmental impacts, developing an industry-wide approach will help focus efforts on areas where we can make the greatest impact.
BioPhorum members are pursuing three central goals; reducing carbon footprint, creating a circular economy, and improving environmental impact transparency across the value chain.
The first step on this journey was to create the sustainability roadmap which defines key industry challenges and solutions on the road to a sustainable biopharmaceutical future.
Three opportunities for impactful sustainability within the industry exist:
- Energy use and emissions
We have a unique opportunity within BioPhorum to connect strategy and policy to practical application. We can tap into changemakers in our network to accelerate the industry’s sustainability progress across all fronts.
Energy use and emissions
We know that manufacturing facilities are the greatest burden on CO2 emissions. By working towards energy efficiency within facility design and operations, organizations can reduce their greenhouse emissions.
Manufacturing processes are water-intense. Clean water is scarce in many parts of the world. This results in a heightened risk of operational shutdown, risk to business continuity, and ultimately patient access.
While the industry is developing knowledge and expertise around water usage, there is still a lack of innovative solutions. In turn, this reduces an organization’s ability to reduce, reuse and recycle. This is especially prominent where companies need to consider regulatory and quality requirements.
Developing new technologies and solutions to protect clean water will support future operations and continued access to products.
Single-use systems are valuable to the industry but plastic waste and its disposal conflicts with emissions, pollution, and waste targets.
Additionally, plastic is heavily reliant on fossil fuels. Therefore, our members are committed to the responsible deployment of plastics. BioPhorum Sustainability is working hard to collect the critical data to demonstrate plastic waste flows. This can then identify opportunities for circular use and sustainable material design.
